Cloud Computing - BPEL in the Cloud

Written by Sami

An article by Denis on WSO2 OxygenTank, discusses multi-tenancy aspect in a cloud computing environment and some of the concerns of hosting business processes in the cloud.

WSO2 Business Process as a Service supports development and easy deployment of business processes modeled using the WS-BPEL standard in a multi-tenanted environment. Also it provides functionality for business process management and hosting in the cloud.

According to this article, some advantages of hosting business processes in the cloud include

  • Enables users to deploy the business processes which run on-premise business process run-time environments like WSO2 BPS. So the users can deploy the existing business processes, manage and monitor them securely in the cloud in the same way they would do on-premise
  • Scalability - On demand scaling business processes within a set of nodes such that it can maintain the run-time of state-full business processes.
  • Tenants can ignore the burden of maintaining a business process run-time infrastructure. They can host their processes in cloud and only focus on maintaining the business-process logic.
  • Cost-effective way to deploy business processes with the means of pay-per-use.

#WSO2Con ~ WSO2 Vision and the Roadmap

Written by Kathiravelu Pradeeban

Discussions
"WSO2 Vision and Roadmap" was the final session and the final key note at WSO2Con - 2011, by Paul Fremantle, Co-Founder & CTO WSO2. In this session, Paul talked about what is going on at WSO2, what can be expected in the near future as well as the far future. He mentioned the way the architectural discussions take place at WSO2 - on going discussions over the corridors and over the architecture@wso2.org mailing list. "WSO2 is 100% Apache license from day one, and based on wire level interoperability," said Paul. Paul also discussed what has happened to WSO2, since we last met at WSO2Con 2010.

Carbon Studio
Carbon Studio is an Eclipse based IDE used to create Carbon applications. Carbon Studio was discussed in a session, "Develop, Test and Deploy your SOA Application through a Single Platform" by Chathuri Wimalasena, Senior Software Engineer, from the WSO2 Carbon Studio team. WSO2 Carbon Studio has faced around 15 minor releases within a year. Paul didn't fail to mention about Carbon Studio in his talk. "Carbon Studio guys are amazing".

Stratos
Paul also mentioned about the release of Stratos-1.0.0 and Stratos-1.5.1. Paul mentioned that StratosLive PaaS going live was remarkable. Paul then discussed what is new in Stratos. "Apache Cassandra / Data-as-a-Service (Cassandra support is now available on premise as well as over the cloud), Deployment Synchronizer, Elastic Load Balancer, Billing/Metering/Throttling, Logging as a Service, Local Transport, and Cache Service are a few to join.. There are a lot more." Paul also mentioned the WSO2's new Product 'WSO2 Load Balancer', "It is sorta alpha now". "A funky thing called Ghost Deployer is yet another upcoming improvement for Stratos". Paul mentioned that WSO2's marketing team is a heavy user of the Mashup Server.

Thoughts
Paul also preached a few non-techy things in his talk. More money doesn't always help, Paul explained this with a real incident. "It is easy to waste money when you have it. But it doesn't mean that it is going to take you there". He pointed out that a typical product team at WSO2 may contain just 2 -3 members, and this shows the power of the WSO2 Platform. It was also pointed out that in house expertise is stronger at WSO2, than WWW.

#WSO2Con ~ Using WSO2 as a Mobile Services Platform

Written by Kathiravelu Pradeeban

"Using WSO2 as a Mobile Services Platform" was a session presented by Simon Bilton, Head of Professional Services, Gödel Technologies Europe at WSO2Con 2011, which was yet another interesting user story of WSO2. In this session, Simon discussed how 'Transport for London' uses WSO2 ESB as the main platform for mobile services.

"Schematic of ESB solution with WSO2 ESB and WSO2 BAM as the core components..", Simon explained the architecture. Simon also showed a mini-version of the deployment diagram with WSO2 Components drawn on a paper, to the audience. He mentioned, "It is really huge to include all of them." Simon also foresees that WSO2 BAM2 will eliminate the remaining issues that the current system has.

"Open Source to the Rescue!", Simon points to the pure open source nature nature of WSO2, and how it was extended to meet the specific needs of their enterprise. "Why think outside the box, if the box can think itself?" asked Simon.

[WSO2Con] Building a Mobile POS Solution with WSO2 Carbon and Apple iPod Touch

Written by Kathiravelu Pradeeban

"Building a Mobile POS Solution with WSO2 Carbon and Apple iPod Touch" was presented by Thilanka Kiriporuwa, Head of Human Resources and Operations, Odel in the WSO2Con 2011, day-2. Kasun Indrasiri from WSO2 joined Thilanka in this session. This session speaks something about ODEL which is a key player in Sri Lankan market. Hence it naturally grabbed most of our interests (as Sri Lankans).

In this session Thilanka explained how the MobilePOS application will be used in ODEL outlets, specifically the one in Alexandra Place, Colombo-07. The next time we go to ODEL, we will see this in action, providing improved user experience, eliminating those long queues during the busy Sundays.

On the other hand, Kasun was explaining the architecture of the Mobile POS solution, the technology behind it, and how WSO2 helped to achieve that. ODEL MobilePOS is exposed to the backend using JSON. The MobilePOS application was developed using Objective C. It talks to barcode scanner and credit card readers using APIs by LineaPro.

"Even if you want to change the app to run on Android, nothing to change in code level for ODEL MobilePOS app, thanks to JSON," said Kasun, when answering one of the questions from the audience regarding why Apple iPhone was chosen over other mobile platforms such as Android. He also explained how the reporting component from WSO2 is used to generate various reports at ODEL.

For the interested readers, a white paper on this ODEL case study can be downloaded from the ODEL Case Study page in OxygenTank.

WSO2Con 2011

Written by Kathiravelu Pradeeban

‎~ Last year Sep̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̨̨̨̨̨̨̨̨17th, we were at Water's edge, Battaramulla marking the 5th year of WSO2. Now after almost 1 year, we are at the same place for WSO2Con 2011 - Sri Lanka. As an interesting co-incident, today I (along with 20+ of my friends) marked my first year at WSO2 as a Software Engineer. [Observations: I have to go a looong way, and have to learn lotsa lotsa things. More TODOs for 2012.]
WSO2Con 2011 started in style today (Sep 13th), with the flavor and cultural touch of Sri Lanka. [13th, 14th, and 15th of Sep - WSO2Con Plus 12th and 16th Pre- and Post- Conference tutorials.]

The session was also live webcast through OxygenTank. http://wso2.org/events/wso2con-2011-colombo. The event was also actively tweeted by the audience and the event's official twitter page. There are a series of blog posts around the talks by the presenters and the audience. The presentation slides have already been shared by the speakers.

Cultural events and entertainment followed the technical sessions. WSO2Con proves that it is not a tech-only/geeky session. Rather it is a technology and networking event for the architects, intellectuals, technologists, researchers, entrepreneurs, and evangelists.

SOA & Business: Thoughts from a Pro

Written by Hiranya Jayathilaka

Most developers and architects today understand the fundamentals of SOA. SOA concepts and related technologies such as WS-* have been around for several years now and they are not exactly the new kids in town. But it's surprising to see that many business organizations are still not harnessing the true power and potential of SOA. SOA can help make a business more agile and flexible to change while reducing lot of development and maintenance overheads. It can also address many IT management problems by implanting proper SOA governance practices and processes within an organization. So then why many organizations have yet failed to realize these goals with SOA?
While many companies have been struggling to implement proper SOA, eBay, the world's largest on-line market place, has done wonders with it. Most of eBay's IT infrastructure is based on SOA principles. They have also developed a fantastic SOA platform called eBay Turmeric, which they open sourced a few months ago (this framework uses WSO2 Governance Registry inside). Sastri Malladi, who is a distinguished architect at eBay has been a driving force behind these SOA adoption efforts. In a couple of days time he's going to deliver a keynote speech titled "Service Orientation - Why is it good for business?" at WSO2Con. If you are wondering why business organizations should consider SOA or why they are failing to implement proper SOA, this is the session to attend. I'm sure it's going to be a very exciting session.

"Catch Who Didn't Match You..." - Facebook unfriend finder on WSO2 StratosLive...!!!

The word "unfriend" was named as the word of year 2009 by the Oxford Dictionary.
unfriend – verb – To remove someone as a ‘friend’ on a social networking site such as Facebook.
The Facebook, the most popular social networking site, doesn't offer a straight forward way to figure out who removed you there.

The "Catch Who Didn't Match You" application caters exactly that. Currently it's running on WSO2 StrtosLive PAAS and backed by a highly scalable cassandra NoSQL data store - available via http://tinyurl.com/stratos-unfriend.
